Centraide Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the Red Cross Receive $775,000 from Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto donated $775,000 to the 2022 fundraising campaigns of regional non-profits Centraide Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the Red Cross, which support thousands of people in need every year. This record donation consists of $400,000 from Rio Tinto employees in the region and $375,000 from Rio Tinto.

“ Centraide Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean helps an average of 65,000 people in need through a hundred or so community organisations,” said Martin Saint-Pierre, Executive Director at Centraide Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. One in four people benefit from the services offered through Centraide, and this represents more than $2.6 million raised with the public and through corporate donations and workplace campaigns, including a major campaign by Rio Tinto for 42 years running. We applaud Rio Tinto and its employees for their contribution. Thank you, Rio Tinto for your wholehearted commitment to the community!”

“Intervening in the region is a challenge in itself because our community is so tight-knit,” said Ghassan Brax, Assistant Director, Corporate Partnerships for the Red Cross. We never know who we will be assisting when a disaster occurs. In June 2022 alone, the Red Cross provided support to 258 people following landslides, floods and fires in the region. This emergency assistance to neighbours, friends and families by Red Cross volunteers wouldn’t be possible without the generosity and solidarity of our donors.”

“For decades, Rio Tinto employees in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region have worked together to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and make a positive impact on society,” said Sébastien Ross, Managing Director, Atlantic Operations for Rio Tinto Aluminium. “This year, Rio Tinto is offering its own contribution on top of the amount donated by the employees, for a total donation of $775,000, which Centraide Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the Red Cross will use to support hundreds of organisations that help the community. We applaud the exemplary work of the volunteers and employees of these organisations, as well as the generosity of Rio Tinto employees, who contributed so much to the 2022 campaign and are actively involved in the community.”
